Compressed charcoal briquettes are the workhorse format for catering kitchens, hookah lounges, food stalls and home grillers who want a predictable burn. A briquette is charcoal powder + a natural starch binder, pressed under high tonnage into a uniform shape — pillow, cube, hexagon, round or standard block — and re-cured. The result: every piece lights at the same rate, holds the same heat, and burns down to roughly the same ash residue.
WoodCharcoal stocks briquettes across all three of our source materials. Wood briquettes are the everyday catering choice — robust heat, hardwood flavour. Bamboo briquettes burn cleaner with a lower ash profile and dominate the mid-tier hookah market. Coconut shell briquettes — especially the hexagon and round formats like Magic Charcoal — are the global standard for premium shisha and Japanese yakitori, with fixed carbon > 85% and ash under 3%.
All briquettes ship by surface only (UN 1361, Class 4.2 hazmat). HSN 4402, GST 5%. Pan-India delivery in 4–10 days via Shiprocket.
Briquettes vs LPG, PNG, synthetic briquettes and coal
Briquettes sit between gas (clean but on-demand only) and mined coal (cheap per kcal but heavily polluting). Synthetic petroleum-binder briquettes look similar but should be avoided for food-contact cooking.
| Dimension | LPG | PNG | Synthetic briquettes | Coal | Charcoal (WoodCharcoal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Source | Petroleum LPG (propane + butane) | Fossil natural gas, piped | Coal fines + paraffin / sawdust + petroleum binders | Mined bituminous or lignite — fossil carbon | Carbonised waste biomass — wood, bamboo, coconut shell |
| Calorific value | ~11,900 kcal/kg (very high) | ~8,500 kcal/Nm³ | 5,500–6,500 kcal/kg | 4,000–6,500 kcal/kg | 6,800–7,800 kcal/kg |
| Fixed carbon | Hydrocarbon gas — not measured | Methane gas — not measured | 55–65% (binder dilutes carbon) | 45–70% with high volatiles | 70–92% (coconut shell + activated top the range) |
| Ash residue | Zero | Zero | 10–15% — sooty, sticks to grates | 10–20% — clinker forms in grate | < 4% (premium grades < 3%) |
| Smoke & odour | Clean flame, faint hydrocarbon smell | Clean flame, near-odourless | Acrid smoke from binders, plastic notes | Heavy black smoke + sulphur dioxide | Near-smokeless once lit — clean wood aroma |
| Burn time / hold | Continuous — depends on flow | Continuous — depends on flow | 60–90 min, uneven | Long burn but slow to light | 2–4 hrs lump · 60–90 min hookah hex · 4–6 hrs blocks |
| Food-contact safety | Safe — gas flame, no residue | Safe — gas flame, no residue | Avoid for direct food cooking — binders contaminate | Avoid — sulphur transfers to food | Food-safe — used in tandoor, sigri and BBQ for centuries |
| Cost per kcal delivered | ₹ 4.5 / 1000 kcal (subsidised), ₹ 6 (commercial) | ₹ 3.8 / 1000 kcal at metered rate | ₹ 2.8 / 1000 kcal — but high ash wastes heat | ₹ 1.5 / 1000 kcal — but environmental + cleaning cost | ₹ 2.2 / 1000 kcal — and zero ongoing infra |
| Carbon footprint | ~3 kg CO₂e per kg burned (fossil) | ~2.7 kg CO₂e per kg burned (fossil) | ~2.8 kg CO₂e + petroleum binder emissions | ~2.4 kg CO₂e per kg — highest particulate load | Near carbon-neutral — agri-waste biomass cycle |

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between charcoal briquettes and natural lumps?
Lumps are raw carbonised wood — irregular shapes that vary in burn time. Briquettes are pressed from charcoal powder + a natural starch binder, so every piece is identical in size and density. Briquettes are easier to manage on a grill or in a hookah bowl; lumps throw higher heat per piece and carry the wood's flavour more directly.
Which briquette shape should I buy?
Hexagon — hookah-first; 26mm/25mm geometry, 60–90 min burn. Cube — catering and hookah; stacks cleanly. Pillow — home BBQ; quick-light, even burn over 2–2.5 hrs. Round / disc (Magic Charcoal) — premium shisha export; 99% pure carbon, low smoke. Standard block — general catering / industrial.
Are your briquettes chemical-free?
Yes. We bind with natural starch only — no petroleum binders, no paraffin, no sodium nitrate accelerants. Premium SKUs (Magic Charcoal, coconut hexagons) are 99% pure carbon with no binder at all (high-tonnage compression). Synthetic briquettes you find at unbranded petrol-pump stalls often use coal fines + petroleum binders — avoid those for food cooking.
How do you ship briquettes safely?
Charcoal is classified UN 1361 Class 4.2 (substances liable to spontaneous combustion) for transport. We dispatch by Shiprocket surface only — air freight is not offered. Moisture is kiln-controlled to < 6% so the pack ships hard and dry, and our cartons are vented to prevent any chance of in-transit heating. Pan-India typically 4–10 days; export by sea container with MSDS + COA on request.
What's the GST and HSN code for charcoal briquettes?
HSN 4402 (4402 10 00 for wood, 4402 90 10 for coconut shell, 4402 90 90 for other vegetable charcoals). GST is 5% on charcoal per CBIC rate notification. Activated carbon is a separate HSN (3802) at 18%. We invoice under GST 2.0 with full CGST+SGST / IGST split.
Can I get private-label briquettes for my hookah brand?
Yes. Coconut hexagons, cubes and round briquettes can be supplied in branded retail cartons (typically 1kg / 5kg / 10kg) with your label, MOQ 500 kg per SKU. SGS testing, MSDS and COA per lot are included. Apply for wholesale to start the conversation.
